Commerce Bank recognizes the importance of brain health with a Be Well Bell from Burrell Behavioral Health

Springfield, MO – Commerce Bancshares Foundation has invested $5,000 toward wellness experiences for its employees in partnership with Burrell Behavioral Health’s Be Well Initiatives. Commerce Bank will display a Be Well Bell in an effort to ring in a new narrative around brain health. Be Well Bells serve as a symbol of hope and healing for the community.

Burrell launched Be Well Initiatives in March 2020, during the early days of the pandemic with the help of psychologist Dr. Shelly Farnan and her team. The unknowns of the pandemic elevated the demand for brain health services among Burrell colleagues and the community so Farnan started working on what would become Be Well Initiatives. The programs, originally requested for Burrell employees, were soon rolled out to community partners and companies as a complement to employee assistance programs.

“Community wellness requires the commitment and participation of every single one of us,” said Farnan. “We are so grateful Commerce is leading the charge as the first corporate sponsor in Springfield. Generous donations from organizations like the Commerce Bancshares Foundation help us take the much-needed brain health support to the community.” Burrell commissions local artists for each bell. Sarah Gatewood of Painted Emotion designed the bell displayed at Commerce Bank.

"I believe art can change lives and even has,” said Gatewood. “These bells will help to open the minds and hearts of viewers and remind people that mental health affects more than only those who need to seek help."

Donors that invest in Be Well wellness experiences for their teams help fund continued brain health programs in the community.

“Commerce Bank is always looking for opportunities to empower individuals, strengthen communities and support a strong region,” said Doug Neff, chairman and chief executive officer, Commerce Bank, Southwest Region. “We proudly display this Be Well Bell not only for customers and the community, but also for team members as a reminder that brain health is important, and help is available. We look forward to making Burrell’s services available to our team as part of our comprehensive well-being offering.”

The bell is displayed in the Commerce Bank branch at 1345 E. Battlefield Springfield, MO 65804.
