Commerce Bank selects Shinique Smith for artist residency and commission for the Commerce Bank Tower

St. Louis – Commerce Bank plans to commission Shinique Smith to create artwork that will be featured in Commerce Bank Tower, currently under construction at the corner of Forsyth and Meramec in Clayton. Smith is a painter and sculptor best known for her monumental abstractions of calligraphy, textiles and collage. Over her career, she has built a complex visual library that reflects both personal and social themes.

With input from the St. Louis art community, Commerce Bank launched a search for an artist who could illuminate St. Louis’ distinctiveness. Smith’s impressive resume, fresh perspective and her interest in immersing herself in the community set her apart. "My work aims to reveal connections across space, time and place to suggest the possibility of constructing worlds renewed by hopeful delight," Smith shares, “I look forward to exploring St. Louis' many landscapes, meeting people and reflecting what I experience through my new artwork for Commerce Bank."

Commerce Bank invited Smith to participate in an artist residency to inspire and inform new work that reflects the fabric of St. Louis and the bank’s contribution to the region “This is an exciting time for Commerce,” said Bob Holmes, Chairman and CEO of Commerce Bank St. Louis. “2022 marks 50 years that Commerce has served customers in St. Louis, and we are furthering our commitment to the region as evidenced by the Commerce Bank Tower and other projects in the area. We look forward to displaying Shinique’s artistic interpretation of the community we are proud to live and work in.”

During the artist residency, April 26 through May 3 at Commerce Bank’s headquarters in Clayton, Smith will be introduced to the communities, businesses and customers Commerce serves across the metro area. She will meet with local leaders, explore St. Louis’ renown arts organizations, enjoy St. Louis cuisine and visit many cultural institutions to glean the essence of the city.

In addition to the residency, Smith will also participate in events corresponding with the grand opening of the Commerce Bank Tower in early 2023.
