Tulsa, Okla.Commerce Bank announced today the promotion of J. Anderson to Tulsa President. Anderson will oversee Commerce’s work in a wide range of industries in Tulsa and throughout eastern Oklahoma, including Commercial and Industrial, Real Estate, and Healthcare.

The move updates the structure of Commerce Bank’s leadership team in Oklahoma. Anderson is stepping into the role held by Gip Gibson since 2015. Gibson has been involved in Tulsa’s banking industry for more than 40 years, including more than 14 years at Commerce. Gibson remains with the bank for the next three years and as a part of a strategic succession plan, will act as a resource during this leadership transition before retiring.

It’s a homecoming for the Oklahoma-born Anderson, who grew up in Stillwater and stayed close to home to earn a bachelor’s degree in finance and Master of Business Administration at Oklahoma State University (OSU).

Anderson’s promotion follows more than 18 years working in Kansas City, where he most recently served as Commerce Bank’s Commercial Banking Division Manager for Agribusiness & Food Processing. He joined the Commerce team more than seven years ago, bringing experience supporting middle-market and large corporate commercial clients.

After years at Commerce Bank’s headquarters in Kansas City, Anderson’s return to Oklahoma gives him the chance to expand the bank’s strategy and serve customers in his home state. His new role reports to Shannon O’Doherty, CEO, Commerce Bank – Oklahoma.

“J. has a great reputation and is highly regarded throughout Commerce Bank,” said O’Doherty. “His name kept rising to the top in our search for this leader. He knows Commerce, he knows the culture, but he is also passionate about the opportunity to serve clients in this region.”

Anderson is eager to get involved with local industry and non-profit organizations in and around Tulsa after sitting on the board of his Kansas City-area church as well as participating in other charitable efforts.

“I moved to Kansas City for my first banking job and always hoped I would return to Oklahoma someday,” said Anderson, whose wife also graduated from OSU. “It’s very exciting to be returning, and I’m looking forward to this next chapter of serving our customers and community in Tulsa.”
